"Revisiting Discipline"

Pastor Selara R. Mann, Jr.

May 30, 2012

Discipline (n.) - training to act in accordance with rules; Latin disciplina - "teaching" from discipilus - disciple - student

Summary:

Due to the breakdown in discipline, we often have lived with immense regret due to failing to maintain not someone else's standard but one that we ourselves put in place. The key to understanding why this appears to be so prevalent in society is based in the origin and definition of the word itself. Discipline is rooted in training and often times in life the training is lacking and teachable moments that occur through time are left unseized by guardians. These failures allow individuals to never recognize the positive nature and outcome of discipline. The best Biblical example of true discipline is the Christ Himself from His tempting encounter with the devil in Matthew chapter 4, to His obedience at the point of crucifixion. Due to the Christ being in the flesh, He faced the same things we face and at the point of death prayed, "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." What if the Christ Himself had chosen not to die and the word "nevertheless" never occurred? Life becomes impossible to imagine. Discipline in our own lives is just as imperative to the success and life sustenance of those around us and ourselves.
