Anointing (n.)- the act of applying oil or an oily liquid especially during a religious ceremony or healing ritual.

When we think of the word anointing in a modern context, regardless of race or creed, we often picture an individual that we have placed on a level just a little beneath God. The imagery in our mind contains an individual “filled” with the Holy Ghost-perhaps a great musician who seems to calm one’s soul with the plucking of every string or playing of every note, or a great psalmist who seems to be able to bring to life the very love of God Himself through words, or a great singer who can melt your heart and bring tears to your eyes as the very sound makes you seem to feel the presence of the Lord, or the great pastor or teacher who seems to connect you through understanding to the very gates of change and hope.

But, anointing by definition is none of these-it is simply the ceremonial application of oil. We have misused the word and changed its meaning colloquially but definitively it remains the same. David was anointed-not because he was a great warrior or because he was a man after God’s own heart-but because when he was still a child Samuel ceremonially poured oil upon him, and therefore anointed him. How many people down through the ages that we have claimed to be anointed, through definitive terms and not through the misuse of the word, have actually been such?
